Day 2 Kovachevitza – Leshten
Breakfast. After breakfast – departure towards Kovachevitza. Exploration of the village, followed by free time. The village was established at the end of the XVII century. The first school was founded in 1830. St. Nicholas Church was built in 1848. The houses in the village are almost entirely made of stone, including rooftops. In 1977 the village was declared an architectural reserve and it still retains its picturesque Renaissance architecture.
The village name dates long back in time. It was named after a skilled blacksmith and farrier (“kovach” in Bulgarian), who died, leaving the fate of the orphaned family to his wife. When friends and relatives from neighboring villages were visiting her, they were saying “I am going to Kovachevitsa” (which means they were visiting the wife of the “kovach”). Thus, over time, was established the name of the neighborhood, around which, at a later stage, grouped all the surrounding neighborhoods to defend themselves from frequent bandit attacks. This gave the beginning of the current village Kovachevitza.
At noon – departure for Leshten. Walk through the village and looking at Renaissance houses. The first thing that makes impression, upon entering the village, is the view of the numerous houses perched on the steep slopes of the mountain. They wear the true spirit of the Bulgarian village . Among the architectural monuments stands the church of “St. Paraskeva “, dated back to 1836, as well as the Religious School. The frescoes in the church are edrar touch and bright colors. The village offers accommodation in attractive ecobuildings – clay (adobe) houses. These houses revive the use of old building materials such as clay, straw and wood. Enjoyment of a sip of morning coffee on the veranda can be extended in this unique place with an afternoon relaxation.
Lunch with traditional Bulgarian cuisine.
